Manglisi Sioni
The Manglisi Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theotokos is one of Georgia's oldest and most important Christian monuments, located in the Kvemo Kartli region.
Key facts:
History: The first church here was built in the 4th century, in the time of Saint Nino. In the 5th century, King Vakhtang Gorgasali established an episcopal see here.
Architecture: The cathedral's present appearance is the result of an 11th-century (1014–1027) reconstruction. It stands out for its unique layout and refined stone carvings.
Frescoes: Rare fragments of 11th-century frescoes survive in the dome.
Manglisi Sioni brings together different stages in the development of Georgian architecture and remains one of the most popular cultural and historical sites to this day.
